Based on information released by Israel, a minimum of 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while detained since October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has indicated that the true number is likely considerably larger, because of hundreds of missing people originating in Gaza.

“In spite of this large quantity of deaths, during 24 months not one individual has faced arrest,” the official said. “There have been no charges over any death.

“During the time these practices are being applied, every Palestinian in detention is in danger, even the physically well individuals, even the youth who have no health problems.”

Notable Incidents

Certain fatalities in custody have been widely reported, including a middle-aged medical chief who lost his life in confinement after a third of a year in custody.

An inmate held with the deceased testified that he was taken to the yard by correctional officers immediately preceding his passing, obviously hurt and naked from the hips downward. His remains has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Further inmates who died in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. The prison service and armed services supplied researchers with the figure of deaths in confinement, and limited other details such as the facility where they lost their lives, but without the inmates’ personal details.

Recognition Difficulties

For 21 instances, primarily detainees from Gaza, investigators could not to match the few details provided by officials to a fatality recorded by advocacy bodies, via accounts from freed prisoners or coverage in the news outlets.

The inmates’ next of kin may not know about their family members’ fatalities as well, as Israel has impeded efforts to monitor detainees it is holding.
