Much like Storm Claudia tore through the north-west the night before, City swept Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their championship potential as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline marked successive WSL setbacks for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, putting them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

United’s capability to manage domestic and continental football with a limited team has been a frequently analyzed subject since they qualified for the European competition. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a handful of changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the dropping of the in-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in comparison, have no similar loading worries. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his squad from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose energetic forward line controlled and tore United open with a sublime opening period display that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

They increased their lead with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Rose was allowed to drive through the middle from defense, the play widened for the hosts. The prominent Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before providing a accurate low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third after a rapid change in possession saw Lauren Hemp afforded the room to drive a shot home from range.

After the Break

The most obvious change came from Skinner at the break as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the contest. Former City player Park came most likely to score, hitting the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to register a single shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have extended their cushion when a superb Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Having failed to defeat any side who ended above them in the prior term, City's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a strong position after nine matches.
